Janette Reber Wellesley Murder-Suicide: Community Grieves Loss of Two Children Killed; Tributes Pour In

The town of Wellesley is mourning a devastating loss after a mother and her two young children were found deceased inside their home Saturday night, an incident that has left neighbors and the wider community in shock.

According to the Wellesley Police Department, officers responded to a residence on Edgemoor Avenue at approximately 9:30 p.m. following a request from a Vermont police department to conduct a well-being check on family members believed to be inside.

Upon arrival, authorities discovered a 7-year-old boy and a 5-year-old girl deceased inside the home. Their mother, identified as Janette Reber Macausland, was also found and later determined to have died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The investigation is being led by the Massachusetts State Police assigned to the Norfolk County District Attorney’s Office, in coordination with local police. Officials have stated that there is no ongoing threat to the public, though the case remains active.

As details continue to emerge, the focus within the community has turned to remembering the lives of the two children, whose loss has been described as especially heartbreaking.

Neighbors and community members have begun sharing tributes, remembering the children as bright, kind, and full of life. One neighbor shared, “They were always so full of energy and joy—you could hear their laughter outside. This is just unimaginable.” Another community member said, “They were innocent, sweet kids who had their whole lives ahead of them. Our hearts are broken for them.”

Though their names have not yet been publicly released, many in the community are honoring their memory by reflecting on the light they brought to those around them—whether through simple moments of play, school, or family life.

Janette Reber Macausland, described by some as a devoted mother, was also known as the estranged wife of Samuel Macausland. Authorities have not released further information regarding the circumstances leading up to the tragedy.

Grief counselors and support resources are expected to be made available as the community processes the loss. Local residents have expressed a desire to come together in support of one another during this difficult time.

Officials say more information will be shared as the investigation progresses. For now, the town remains united in mourning, remembering two young lives lost far too soon and offering support to all those affected.
